Like:
- The contrast between the suit and the sweater. A thick cable-knit sweater with a crew neck is definitely casual, but mixing it with the suit makes for an interesting High/Low.
- The contrast. It’s not terribly strong but the brown of the suit works well with his hair and the sweater with his face. It’s a good kind of monochrome because it keeps you looking at his face.
Fence:
- The popped collar. This is tough to pull off. It helps that he’s wearing some very cold-weather clothes and that he doesn’t have an overcoat on. That being said, he should pop it back down as soon as he sets foot indoors.
Don’t Like:
- Nothing. This is a solid, simple look.

I notice the cable-knit of the sweater here has a pattern that varies a bit. I remember you’ve mentioned the cable-knit sweater before, in your previous post you linked to an example of a sweater with a uniform pattern across the whole torso.
Do you have an opinion on the type of knit pattern on this sort of sweater? The ones with changing patterns look a little odd to me, but maybe it’s something i could get used to.
Good observation. The sweater this man is wearing is called an Aran sweater or a Fisherman sweater. They originated in fishing villages in Ireland and the different stitch patterns have different interpretations. Some had religious significance while others were representative of other attributes or character traits the men wanted to emulate.
The design has since become popular over the world and many companies will choose the knit pattern based on aesthetic purposes only.
The sweater is actually an Aran sweater, it’ originated on the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. And the stitch patterns were very guarded clan secrets often used to identify the bodies of fisherman. The wool is water repellent and had many other amazing properties ….North Face before it’s time !
