Chambray and Linen

7 May, 2012

One of the more nuanced things that a lot of men never think about is what textures are appropriate for which seasons. This isn’t a make-or-break type situation but it can make clothing more comfortable and look better depending on the time of year. Just like tweed is appropriate during Autumn and Winter, materials like seersucker and linen are what’s best for late Spring and Summer.

A good pair with linen is chambray. It looks a lot like denim but is softer and cooler on the skin.

Because it looks more like denim it’s another good High/Low material. You can pair it with a linen jacket like this and look both relaxed and refined almost anywhere. I have a chambray shirt and it sees regular rotation during the warmer months.

Here is a classic hat worn in a classic way.

No uncomortable or tongue-in-cheek irony here. This guy is killing it.

Trigger Warning:

I think it’s funny that feminists plaster those all over even the most mundane of posts. If they’re so strong and independent, why does everything scare them?

Well, this picture may trigger involuntary gagging or attempts to punch out the closest person next to you. You’ve been warned.

Any of you Ev/Psych guys have a theory as to why a pideon-toed stance looks submissive?

Buttoned Up

I’ve seen this a lot more recently and I’m on the fence about it.

That being said, Boyd Crowder from “Justified” pulls this off extremely well. It somehow makes him look more dangerous than the alternative.

From what I’ve seen in pictures of men who can make this work, there are a couple of rules. First, it should be a blue-collar type work shirt. Something like linen or madras isn’t going to look good buttoned up all the way. Second, it should be consistent with the rest of what you have on. I have a feeling this is a jeans only type application. Third, you can’t hesitate with it. And fourth, you can’t ever ever ever do this:
