High/Low: Grooming Edition

The power of contrast that’s wielded in a High/Low look does not just apply specifically to clothing. Case in point.

Greasy hair and a beard that’s about three inches too long to run in any respectable circle. But, the fact that his particular grooming habits are framed by his beautiful suit means this man is someone you’d be interested in talking to instead of just a bum on the street. I’m firmly convinced that this why the Most Interesting Man in the World from the Dos Equis commercials has a beard. If they’d kept him clean-shaven, he’d be too bland and predictable. He’d still be awesome, but he’d look less interesting.

If you’re stuck in a rut with your style and want to take your contrast game a different direction, try adding the grooming element to your High/Low looks.

Personalized Handkerchief

In my front left pocket I always have my pocket knife and a handkerchief. While the knife sees daily use, the handkerchief really only comes out once every couple of weeks or so. It sure is nice to have around when you make the mistake of grabbing an item at the grocery store that’s been spilled on, your nephew gets a bloody nose, or your wife breaks down into grateful tears at your sheer awesomeness.

After seeing this picture, I really like the idea of having my handkerchiefs personalized. It used to be that every man carried this and most had their initials monogrammed on them. The cool thing about personalizing something this small is that it’s a detail that won’t get noticed all the time. It’s just another step forward in the assault on the ordinary in that you have that detail just for your own enjoyment. Having a monogrammed or otherwise embroidered hanky won’t get you laid or land you that promotion, but when you see it, it will be a reminder that you do things just because you like them, and you’re not ordinary

A Daring Tie

Floral patterns are making a comeback and, for the most part, I’m not a real fan. The whole vibe is a bit too femme and too dandy for me. That doesn’t mean it can’t be embraced within reason though.

I found this tie while perusing my usual blog list today and was pleasantly surprised by how good it looks. It’s a summer tie for sure and shouldn’t be a staple that gets worn too often, but it sure does look good. It’s also relatively cheap at a whopping $40.
