Dressing Well is for Ugly Men

3
10 December, 2012

I was meeting with a local blogger and talking about my site when he asked me why I modeled for my shoots. I told him I know I’m not ugly but I’m certainly not stopping traffic either. My modeling for my own posts is to show that dressing well benefits men from any part of the bell curve.

There’s a strong but false feeling amongst the average men of the world that dressing well is important for already-attractive men. So if you’re not making People’s 50 Sexiest Men Alive list or having women beat down your door, you can’t benefit from upping your style game. This is patently false.

Most attractive men can throw on anything and look good in it. It’s the average or ugly man who needs to pay more attention to his style as a way to compensate for weaknesses and accentuate his strengths. Below are some examples of men who will not be considered handsome of their own right, but look very good because of the way they’re dressed.

Caption Contest Winner

10 December, 2012

Thursday’s post on Stupid, Effeminate Poses got a lot of good comments. Before I tell you the winner I want to show you an example of a good, masculine pose.

 strong masculine posture

I can’t tell if this is a candid shot or not. I don’t really care. Look at how much space this guy is taking up. His left leg is blocking the aisle while his right is comfortably in front of the seat next to him. There is absolutely no self-soothing body language here. It also looks like that laugh is pretty genuine – nothing ironic or self-conscious about it. Add the pink pants and you can see a man who’s comfortable with his place in the world and is happy to be there.

That narrative may or may not be true but it’s the impression given off by his body language and his clothing. This is the kind of guy I’d want to hang out with.

Back to the winner for the worst pose of the bunch, I had quite a few to choose from. However, Grey was our winner with this little gem:

Hot stud 9 o’clock….SCHWING!

I haven’t heard a Wayne’s World reference in years and it fit this scenario perfectly.

So Grey, you’ll be getting a free Basic Consultation from me. Just shoot me an email and we can get things set up for you.

Casual Friday: Cargo Pants

7 December, 2012

Cuong Le sweater and cargo pants

Like:

  • The sweater. It’s a good neutral color that’s still strong enough to keep the focus on his face. It’s also just a bit on the slouchy side making it more casual.
  • The boots. Beat up dress boots are a great High/Low look. They’re still taken care of but they look comfortably worn in.
  • The watch. I’m not normally a fan of large, metal watches but this looks good because it contrasts with everything else he’s wearing.

Fence:

  • The pants. The fit on them is awesome and I like the cargo resurgence that’s been happening in menswear for the last year. However, it’s something that may end up looking very dated. We’ll have to see how it plays out.
  • The jewelry. I like the fact that he’s wearing something, and that it’s small, but the red bracelet looks like a girl’s hairband. The proportions between the band and the rest of the ring on his finger are also very feminine.

Don’t Like:

  • The purse. I get the functionality, but it looks too girly. From its lack of stretching I’d say whatever he has in there can probably fit in his pockets (especially since he’s wearing cargos).

Stupid, Effeminate Poses

6 December, 2012

UPDATE: I value wit more than crassness – just a heads up if you want to win.

I spend a good portion of my week digging through sites like Pinterest, Tumblr, the Fancy and others in an attempt to find content worth writing about. While there is plenty of good stuff out there, it seems like there is even more that is worse, and one thing that keeps popping up is the effeminate posing of all-too-many male models

A favorite complaint of feminists is how women are portrayed as sexually submissive or simply as pieces of meat on things like advertisements and movie posters. The irony of hating on women posing like women has been addressed countless times and is not really the point of this post. However, it’s funny for me to see them up in arms about women posing like women while the men are subject to poses just as effeminate and submissive.

Posture and body language are a huge aspect of conveying masculinity as was discussed in the comments section of last week’s post about dressing too perfectly. Here are more examples of just how unmanly even the most stylish or swole men can look when they’re posed submissively.

These are all terrible but this one takes the cake:
